[2] In 1963 Douglas Englebart, working at the Stanford Research Institute and influenced by the ideas of Vannever Bush, proposed a “Conceptual Framework for the augmentation of man’s intellect.” He believed that computers, because of their speed and power, could be used to enhance and extend human communication. [3] Ted Nelson coined the term “hypertext” in 1965. He had been thinking about structuring different documents in ways that would allow people to move freely through the documents, following & recording their interests and associations, and so building their own documents. [4] In 1968, Douglas Englebart and W.K. English created NLS (oN Line System), an experimental hypertext tool. NLS contained a large database of information, and allowed its users to see the information organized in several different ways, depending upon their needs. [5] HyperCard, developed by Bill Atkinson, an Apple fellow, was released in 1987, and quickly became the most widely used Hypermedia system. Its ease of use and many features (like MacPaint tools and HyperTalk, its programming language) helped to move Hypermedia out of research and into businesses and homes.
